Dyson vacuum cleaners are designed with technology that facilitates deep cleaning of your home. The precision in cleaning can be largely attributed to the powerful suction on a wide range of floor types. The Dyson V series consists of the V6 model, the V7 model and the V8 model, all of which are convertible cordless vacuums. They are powered by power fade-free lithium-ion batteries which makes them lightweight upright vacuums. Dyson is also renowned making extremely high-quality HEPA filters that are good enough to capture allergens such as mould spores, dust mites, pollen, and pet dander. All the Dyson V series models have relatively similar units and almost the same design, but there are distinct differences when it comes to functionality.
Dyson V6 models
The Dyson V6 is an older range by Dyson, and when it was released, few cordless vacuums could compete with it in terms of the suction power and design. Even though it has been superseded by the Dyson V7 and V8, the V6 is still popular since it is relatively cheaper than its counterparts, and it actually performs excellently.
The V6 range comes in two broad categories: cordless stick vacuums, which can be used as both a regular vacuum cleaner and a handheld, and handheld vacuums, which don't come with an extension tube and all the accessories of a cordless stick but are cheaper. There are features that all V6 models share. These include:
1. V6 digital motor: All Dyson V6 models use the same motor which can spin at speeds of up to 110,000 per minute. This quality makes V6 the superior model when compared to other cheaper vacuums.
2. Two-tier radial cyclones: The cyclones in the V6 separate the dirt particles from the air by spinning it at high speeds while maintaining constant suction.
3. Trigger system: The V6 does not have an on/off switch. Instead, you have to hold down the trigger while using it. This is a clever way of increasing the effective battery time of your vacuum, but many users consider it to be irritating to always have to hold the trigger.
4. 20 minutes of operating time: If it has a full charge, the V6 can be used for up to 20 minutes. However, because power stops whenever you release the trigger as you use it, the effective time tends to be longer.
5. Max power mode: The boost mode or max power mode increases suction power at the expense of battery power, lasting 6 minutes, and is very effective against most hard-to-clean areas.
6. Dock stationAll full cordless models in the V6 range come with a docking station that will charge the unit and also hold the associated attachments.
7. Optional HEPA filter: This feature provides V6 models with a full seal efficient HEPA filtration system that is very convenient especially if you have asthma or allergies.
If you are cleaning mainly hard floors, go for the V6 Fluffy due to the soft roller clean head which is great for both large and small particles. For an extensive carpet home, the V6 Absolute is a great choice due to its powerful direct-drive cleaner head which is great for deep carpet cleaning.
The Dyson V6 has been withdrawn from the official website of Dyson, but you can still find many V6 variants available for sale.
Dyson V7 models
The V7 shares quite a few similarities with Dyson V6. Both models can be converted into a powerful handheld by simply detaching the tube. They also use the same trigger mechanism to prolong battery life. Another similarity is the max power mode that gives the vacuums a huge power boost for about 6 minutes. Additionally, they are both lightweight, although the V7 is slightly heavier. However, the V7 comes with a few upgrades which make it more expensive than the V6, but cheaper than V8. Features of the V7 that set it apart from the V6 include:
1. The “No-Touch” dirt emptying system: While the V6 only has a trap door for emptying the bin, the V7 comes with an internal collar that effectively pushes dirt and dust out. This system is effective in ensuring that clumps don’t get stuck, hence the name.
2. Suction power: While the V7 has slightly lower suction when compared to the V6 on regular mode, the V7 has 75% more brush bar power and intensity than a typical standard V6. This, combined with the powerful suction, makes the V7 clean deeper into carpets.
3. 30 minutes of continuous operation time: The V7 runs for half an hour, an improvement from the run-time of the V6, which runs for a mere 20 minutes. The extra 10 minutes are especially significant considering the fact that the trigger mechanism prolongs battery life.
4. Accessories and tools: Both the V6 and V7 come with a crevice tool and combination tool, as well as a docking station as standard. The difference comes in with the V7 crevice tool, which is easier to snap on and off the vacuum cleaner.
5. Direct drive motorhead:
Unlike the V models, all the V7 models come with a direct drive motorhead that makes use of a set of spinning brushes and powerful suction to deeply clean both low and high pile carpets.
6. Sound dampening insulation: The V7 is quieter than the V6 because it comes with sound dampening insulation systems.
Currently, there are four variants of the V7: the MotorHead, Absolute, Animal, and HEPA. The motor, battery, suction, cleaning power and dustbin are all the same. The difference comes with varying cleaning heads, accessories, and filters depending on your needs.
Dyson V8 models
The Dyson V8 is more expensive than both the V6 and V7. However, a few V7 design aspects have been replicated in the V8. Both have the "No Touch" dirt emptying system that is missing in the V6, the same bin capacity (0.50L), as well as other standard features of all Dyson vacuum cleaners have. However, the V8 is heavier. Other features that distinguish the V8 include:
1. Digital V8 motor: The V8 comes with Dyson’s strongest cord-free motor, and arguably the most powerful one available today.
2. Standardized entire machine HEPA: This feature facilitates the removal of almost all mould spores, dust mites, pollen, pet dander, and even microscopic particles in the air as it is being used.
3. Direct driver cleaner head: The direct driver cleaner head provides 150% higher brush strength than the V6, making it the most effective.
4. 40 minutes of continuous operation time:When the battery is fully charged, expect the V8 to operate for 40 minutes, which is usually more than enough to get the job done.
5. Max power mode: While the V6 and V7 provide 6 minutes of boost power, the V8 offers an impressive 7 boosted power minutes.
Both the V7 and V8 have an optional Absolute model that comes with a nylon roller attachment which is essential in picking bigger particles from smooth floors. Accessories are also similar, but they vary depending on the version.
Verdict: V6, V7 or V8?
By far, the V8 is the best cordless vacuum in the market. Unfortunately, it is also the most expensive. However, determining which Dyson V series vacuum is the best fit for you boils down to the attachments and your needs. Luckily, you have a wide selection, starting with the modest V6 that performs exceptionally well on hardwoods, to the impressive V7, to the top of the line V8 Absolute that gives you incomparable versatility.
