10 days later, here’s Trend #10 out of the 10 Future Trends 2017! This one is my favourite.

In 2017 a series of buggies will land on the moon - the first time since the US and USSR moon landings in the 1970s left five buggies up there.

While the old buggies were operated by astronauts, the new buggies will be remote controlled, and sent by private teams who are all competing for the $20m Google Lunar X Prize.

4 of the 17 teams have already hitched a ride on rockets, in a race to be the first to land, drive and send back photos. India’s Team Indus is heading up in India’s PSLV rocket. Israel’s SpaceIL and USA’s Moon Express have a ride on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, and this week Germany’s PT Scientist announced a deal with space brokers Spaceflight to get them on the moon in 2017.

These 2017 landings will give us our first images of earth from the surface of the moon since the 1970s. Back then, they sparked a global awareness of what Buckminster Fuller called “Spaceship Earth”.

At the time the futurist and architect said: “Humanity is taking its final exam. We have come to an extraordinary moment when it doesn’t have to be you or me. There is enough for all.”

Bucky saw all our world’s biggest challenges as being distribution problems. Why do we have poverty if we have enough money? Why do we have hunger if we have enough food? Why do we have lack of education if we have enough teachers? Because in each case they aren’t distributed properly.

Bucky saw that we already had enough technology - even in the 1970s - to solve all these challenges,1 saying: “We need not operate competitively any longer. If we succeed, it will be because of youth, truth and love.”

Why did he call this the final exam? Because he saw that the reason we had not solved all our global challenges was our consciousness had not grown to harness the technology. It was the final exam because either our consciousness would accelerate and catch up to harness the technology for good. Or it would not, and we would destroy ourselves.

He said: “Whether it is to be Utopia or Oblivion will be a touch-and-go relay race right up to the final moment.”

In 2015 - 40 years after Buckminster Fuller spoke about the final exam - the United Nations published the 17 United Nations Global Goals. These goals set 2030 targets from ending poverty to reversing climate change, to education and equality for all. In 2016, milestones for the goals from now through to 2030 were created and next week, on December 5th, the first Global Goals gathering and gala will be held in New York.

2017 will be the first year the final exam gets a global report card on World Wide Wealth.

Bucky said “Do we really understand that each of us is here only for all the others? If the answer is ‘I am here for me,’ then I think humanity is going to fail its exam.”

World Wide Wealth is the concept of us being here for each other - that by working together we have far greater power to create and contribute wealth, which is the only way to pass the exam.

Here are some milestones we will reach in 2017, which are early indicators we are on the right track:

1) We will pass the milestone of over 500 million entrepreneurs, practicing resourcefulness and value creation (up from less than 100 million in 2000).

2) We will pass the milestone of 1.5 billion people donating money and 1 billion people volunteering time to help others, according to the Charities Aid Foundation’s World Giving Index.

3) We will pass the milestone of over 50% of the world connected via the Internet (up from 46% in 2016, with 1 million new users connecting every day).

4) We will pass the milestone of over 50% of Internet users from Asia (up from 48% in 2016), making the balance of our online population match our global population for the first time.

5) We will pass the milestone of solar power below the cost of electric grid power in 80% of the world.

Each day we are hearing of new solutions from individuals, teams and entrepreneurial projects that go another step to passing Bucky’s Final Exam.

Our Fast Forward Summits are one example of the final exam in action. In 2017 we will be running 8 Major Summits and 50 Satellite Summits around the world, connecting entrepreneurs to make the greatest positive impact on the planet, and aligning all our activities to measurable progress towards the 17 United Nations Global Goals.
